Protection In Transit
Volume 1, Issue 1

Responsibilities

Your Responsibilities

You are expected to be present on the days of packing, loading & delivery. It is most desirable to have at least one other responsible adult at your home to assist you, since one adult cannot easily manage the moving process.

Packing: Customer vs. Ark

Ark is experienced at professionally securing and packing valuable and delicate items. You must decided whether to pack your own household items or request that Ark do it for you. If you choose to do your own packing, it is important that you use appropriate materials and packing techniques in order to protect your goods in transit. If there is no external damage to a container packed by its owner, concealed damages may not be covered under Ark liability. In the event of such damaged items and their container(s) for our inspection.

Inventory: Basic to all Claims

When our driver picks up your shipment, and before it is loaded, he will list all of your household items on an inventory. The driver will make notes concerning the physical disposition of each piece (noting pre-existing condition), and will attach a numbered sticker to that item. You must check the inventory to confirm that each piece is listed and that the condition of each piece is accurately indicated. If you disagree with any of the driver’s notations, you should make a note on the same inventory sheet. After loading, you will be asked to sign the inventory and you will be given a copy. Make sure that the information which appears on the inventory form is accurate at the time you sign it. Before the driver leaves, make sure you go through the house, garage, cellar, backyard and storage room to be sure that no items have been left behind by the driver.

High Value Coverage

In an effort to protect your special belongings, Ark Moving & Storage has developed specific procedures for preparing and shipping high items of value. Items of "high value" are those that are considered to have a value exceeding $100.00 per pound. Some of these items typically considered of "high value" include: jewelry, furs and antiques, silverware, crystal, gems, precious metals, currency, art and coin collections, oriental rugs, tapestries, and some computer software. If you decide to include items of high value in your shipment, you must notify your Ark representative before packing or moving day. To assure that these articles are not limited to minimum liability, you must list these items on the High Value inventory form, which we will provide. Be sure to record signatures, serial numbers and manufacturers’ marks before signing. If Ark is packing your belongings, please instruct the lead packer to leave cartons containing high value items unsealed. If you are packing your belongings, please instruct the lead packer to leave cartons containing high value items unsealed if you are packing, do not seal any of the high value cartons. The driver that loads your shipment must be able to verify that the items listed are contained in the carton. On moving day the driver will seal these cartons and assign an inventory number in your presence. If a claim is made, the maximum amount of any settlement is limited by the valuation declared for the entire shipment. If the high value items are included in your shipment but not listed on the High Value inventory form, Ark liability for any loss or damage is limited to $100.00 per pound per article regardless of the valuation coverage selected. In addition, any claims settlement will be based on the type of valuation you select. Should you choose a coverage that carries a deductible, or one that is based on depreciated value, this would affect the claims settlement made. Before any settlement can be made, you will be required to furnish Ark with verification of ownership and proof of value.

Valuation Coverage

Valuation is not insurance. It is a limited carrier set by a tariff. In the event of loss or damage during your move, Ark’s maximum liability is determined by the value at which you release your goods and the coverage option you choose. We want you to understand the coverage options from which you may choose.

Three Options:

Basic Liability - Basic Liability is the minimum coverage under which your goods can be released and is provided at no additional cost to you. Arks maximum liability for your shipment is established by multiplying the weight of the shipment by $0.60. Loss or damage will be compensated on the basis of the weight of the article multiplied by $0.60. (Example: A 100 pound table is lost or damaged. Our maximum liability would be $60.00 ( 100lb x $0.60 ), the cost of the repair or actual cash value whichever is less).

Standard Transit Protection ("STP")

Standard Transit Protection provides for repair, replacement or reimbursement (whichever is less) based on an item’s deprecated value. Depreciation is calculated by determining current replacement cost and then decreasing that value to reflect the age of the item. STP coverage must be purchased at an amount, which is at least equal to the shipment weight multiplied by $1.25.(Example: On a 10,000-pound shipment, you must declare a value of at least $12,500.) You have the option of declaring a higher value than the minimum.

Full Value Protection

The best protection in the industry, "Full Value" coverage, provides for reimbursement (whichever is less) at today’s replacement cost. No depreciation is applied. This coverage extends to pairs and sets. If Ark cannot replace an exact duplicate to match the other item(s) in a pair or set, we will replace the pair or set and salvage rights may be exercised. "Full Value" coverage must be purchased at an amount, which is at least equal to the shipment weight multiplied by $3.50 per pound, or $5,000.00, whichever is greater. (Example: On a 10,000-pound shipment, you must declare a value of at least $35,000.00.) You can declare a higher value than the minimum and can purchase "Full Value" at a reduced cost by choosing a $250.00 or $500.00 deductible.

Reporting a Claim

To report a loss or damage to your shipment call Ark at (704) 376-5556, ask to speak with a member of our claims department. Please have the following information ready when you call:

-Name on contract

-New address & phone number (work & home)

-Registration or quote number found at the upper right hand corner of your bill of lading.

Do Not Discard Any Damaged Items Until A Representative Has Been Given The Opportunity To View The Damage

Claims for damage or loss or delay must be filed within (9) months of your delivery date. We strongly recommend that you file you claim as soon as possible so that the processing time is not delayed.

LIMITED RESPONSIBILTY

Inherent Vice/Mechanical Condition Unknown

Inherent vice means that the carrier is not responsible for any damages, which are inherent to the article being shipped. Simply stated, we are not responsible for any damage to the internal (mechanical) condition of appliances or electronic equipment unless there is exterior damage noted to the item, or to the carton in which it is packed.

Climatic Condition

Any damages which are the direct result if change in temperature and humidity are beyond the carriers control.

Packed by Owner ("PBO") Cartons

Ark moving may not be liable for any items that have been packed by someone other than Ark unless the carton itself has been damaged. If carton damage is visible, it should be noted on the inventory.

IMPORTANT REMINDER

The following items are considered by law to be unsafe, and therefore cannot be shipped:

  • Flammables
  • Perishables
  • Aerosols
  • Charcoal
  • Liquids
  • Ammunition
  • Matches

When Is The Best Time To Move?

If there is a choice, most moving companies suggest you select a time other than summer or the end of the month. The heaviest demands are placed on vans, equipment and personnel during the summer months (June through mid-September) when children are out of school, and at the end of any month.

Stevens Van Lines understands that there are many factors which influence your choice of when to move. Factors involved in the decision may include:

  • New Job responsibilities
  • Separation of the family while the move is underway
  • Transferring children during the school term
  • Buying or selling a home

Stevens Van Lines will help you design a move that will accommodate your busy schedule.

How Long Does It Take To Move?

This depends on many factors, including the time of the year, weather conditions, time required to load and unload, and the direction and distance is travelling. Because the furnishings of the household will not fit in a modern van, it is often necessary for two or more shipments to be loaded on the same van. Each shipment is carefully sectioned off from others.

With the help of a centralized dispatching system, pickup and delivery dates are then scheduled according to your needs and the origins and destinations of individual shipments.

When Should I Call A Moving Company?

The earlier the better. Though the actual van assignment may not be made until a few days before your move, it is wise to give Stevens from four to six weeks advance notice, if possible. The more lead time you can give, the more likely Stevens will be able to meet your preferred dates.

What is a Tariff?

This is the "price list" used by moving companies who provide interstate transportation of household goods. The list includes all of the various services offered by the company and is on file with the Interstate Commerce Commission. Your Stevens Van Lines agent has copies of the tariff which you may inspect.

How And When Should I Pay The Moving Company?

Tariff regulations require that all charges be paid in cash, credit card, money order, cashier’s check or traveler’s check before your shipment is unloaded at destination. On some occasions prior arrangements can be made for later billing of charges. Stevens is sorry, but the van operator is not permitted to accept a personal check. This payment rule applies to both regular and binding estimates.
